Artist Statement
I create emotional landscape paintings. They can be abstract, semi-abstract, or surreal. Regardless of the medium, all my paintings share one essential aspect: they convey to the viewer the emotions experienced when being in that place.

Biography

Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist based in Stralsund/Germany. With a background in Geology and Paleontology, she combines a scientific understanding of natural forms with a poetic sensitivity to atmosphere and emotion. Her works — often described as emotional landscapes — explore the intersection between external nature and inner experience.

She completed her degree in Geology and Paleontology (Diploma) at the University of Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany in 2006, and subsequently worked as a geologist in an engineering consultancy until 2012, focusing on modeling the effects of geothermal energy use on surrounding rock formations.

In 2013, she founded her independent publishing house, Doreen Gehrke Verlag, where she has published fiction and poetry.

Since 2016, Doreen has been devoted to painting, developing a distinctive visual language rooted in emotional expression and the natural world. Her artworks have been available for sale since 2018, initially through Etsy (until September 2025), since April 2025 through the international online gallery Singulart and since February 2026 through the international online gallery Saatchi Art.

From 2018 until the end of 2024, Doreen was actively involved in managing her family’s hospitality business, a breakfast guesthouse. In 2022, following her mother’s serious illness, she assumed full leadership of the business, overseeing operations and ensuring continuity during a challenging period. At the end of 2024, she formally transferred the business to her brother. Since 2025, she has been able to dedicate herself fully to her work as an artist, writer, and self-publisher, focusing entirely on the development and international presentation of her artistic practice.

She accepts commissioned work and continues to expand her practice, merging artistic intuition with her scientific perspective.
